Program Description: Continuing its nearly sixty-year commitment to public service, the University established the Institute for Governmental Service and Research (IGSR) in October 2006 through the consolidation of two organizations- the Institute for Governmental Service (IGS) and the Bureau of Governmental Research (BGR). The mission of IGSR is to advance the University’s public service commitment through applied research, outreach, and technology innovations that meet the needs of state and local government. The Institute partners with local governments, state agencies, and community organizations to undertake research and technical assistance projects in areas such as: public health, criminal justice, organizational effectiveness, leadership and governance, land use and growth management, fiscal analysis and infrastructure financing. The Institute also operates a leadership development program for the state’s municipal and county officials called the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance.
